Zumba in a care home? Why not!
By combining aerobic cardiovascular exercise with upbeat Latin music tempos, Zumba® offers a total body work out by combining the moves used in different Latin dances such as samba, mambo and salsa, as well as belly-dancing, hip-hop and martial arts. Together, these various Zumba® fitness elements provide exciting, rhythmical exercise routines that are great fun and they can be done standing or in a seated position.
Judging by the faces of the residents at Rusthall Lodge, the classes are also good fun!
For older people and particularly those living in a care home setting, the principal focus should be on promoting physical activity that will enhance the quality of life through maintaining and restoring functionality which can then help with activities of daily living.
But classes can do so much more than that. There is the increased social side of things; groups of people coming together to enjoy themselves contributes to better mental health and wellbeing not only of the individual but of the 'community' coming together.
Activities continue to play a vital role in care home life. The activity programme on offer at any care home should be varied and supported by the home management team. Zumba is now a firm favourite with ou residents and a weekly class.
